What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the treatment by hand of neuromusculo-skeletal dysfunction of the body. Simply put, chiropractic serves to identify and correct imbalance in the nerves, muscles and joints of the body. Our bodies are subjected to multiple stressors throughout our lifetime (physical, emotional, and chemical). The beauty of our body is that it is a highly adaptable and resilient organism that is capable of handling most of these stressors effectively. However, when the stressors become too great or accumulate, the body can gradually lose its’ ability to cope. When this happens, imbalances occur in the muscles, nerves and joints of the body and eventually lead to symptoms such as back pain, headaches, irritability, and loss of sleep. Chiropractic is the science of locating and removing these imbalances allowing the body to regain balance and tolerance of stress.

Once your examination is completed and a diagnosis is made, treatment consists of mobilization and release of nerve, muscle and joint fixations. Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes highly refined skills developed during the intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractor typically uses his/her hands to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to reduce pain, and restore or enhance joint function. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

What is the “cracking” or “popping” sound that happens with a chiropractic treatment?
This sound is called “cavitation”. Moveable joints in the body are lubricated with synovial fluid and when a joint is moved beyond a certain range of movement pressure changes in the fluid and joint cause the formation of bubbles of gas which “pop” when released. There is no “cracking” of bones involved. The result is an increase in mobility of the joint as well as a relaxation of the muscles around the joint.
